Exploring Plett’s Sea Temperatures
Located on the temperate southeast coast of South Africa, Plettenberg Bay experiences seasonal fluctuations in sea temperatures. During the months of December to March, sea temperatures tend to rise to an average of 22.5°C, offering pleasant conditions for beachgoers and water enthusiasts. These warmer waters attract a plethora of marine life including various fish species that are not often seen in these waters.
In the summer months, the easterly winds are more prevalent which results in the upwelling of cold, nutrient rich water to the surface. This results in a sudden drop in water temperature of between 10 – 12°C and algael blooms which don’t last for too long.
The colder months from June to August sees minimum temperatures averaging at 17°C. For most dives, a 5mm one piece wetsuit will suffice with a hood or jacket.
